Abstract

The ammonoid species Tornoceras frechi (middle Frasnian, Late Devonian) is revised on the basis of the original type material and material from the type locality. The detailed study of conch form and conch ontogeny requires a differentiation from records from the Anti-Atlas of Morocco, which have so far largely been referred to as Phoenixites frechi. This material from the Frasnian-Famennian boundary interval of the Anti-Atlas is described here as two new species: Tornoceras occasus n. sp. and Tornoceras ortus n. sp. Phoenixites is considered a subjective synonym of Tornoceras. Tornoceras frechi can no longer be index fossil for the earliest ammonoid zone of the Famennian; for the sections in the Anti-Atlas it has to be replaced by Tornoceras ortus.
