Abstract
The Late Jurassic nautiloid Pseudonautilus cf. geinitzi (Oppel, 1865) is reported for the first time from the Upper Kimmeridgian (Beckeri Zone, Ulmense Subzone) of Southern Germany. The single specimen is the hitherto stratigraphically oldest record of the genus. Pseudonautilus Meek, 1876 is easily distinguishable from Bavarinautilus Schairer & Barthel, 1977 by its characteristic suture line. The latter genus was originally introduced as a subgenus of Pseudonautilus, but it is herein considered as a junior subjective synonym of Xenocheilus Shimansky, 1957. Nautilus schneidi Loesch, 1914 occurs with Bavarinautilus and was previously assigned to Pseudaganides Spath, 1927; it is disputably transferred to Belmonticeras Rulleau, 2008, together with some other Late Jurassic taxa. The type series of Pseudonautilus geinitzi from the Tithonian–lower Berriasian Štramberk Limestone of present-day Czech Republic is re-examined. An additional specimen of this species is reported from the late Tithonian (Microcanthum Zone) of southern Spain and therefore enlarges the palaeogeographical distribution of the genus.
