Abstract
A new find of very large, well preserved upper tooth plates with attached pterygopalatine bones from the lower Givetian marls from the Breuner Mulde of the Rhenish Massif is described as Chirodipterus rhenanus n. sp. It is the first evidence of the genus in the upper Middle Devonian of Europe; the genus was until now only described from the Upper Devonian from this continent. The tooth plates of Chirodipterus rhenanus n. sp. are compared with the West Australian species Chirodipterus australis, the Canadian species Stomiahykus thlaodus and the German species Chirodipterus wildungensis. The new Middle Devonian find is very similar to the tooth plates of the Upper Devonian species of Germany.
Kurzfassung
Beschrieben wird ein Neufund eines Paars ungewöhnlich großer Pterygopalatina mit sehr gut erhaltenen Zahnplatten von Chirodipterus rhenanus n. sp. aus dem unteren Givet des rechtsrheinischen Schiefergebirges. Es ist für Europa der erste Nachweis der bisher nur aus dem Oberdevon bekannten Gattung für das obere Mitteldevon. Der Neufund wird mit den Zahnplatten von Chirodipterus australis aus Westaustralien, Stomiahykus thlaodus aus Kanada und Chirodipterus wildungensis aus dem Kellerwald verglichen.
