An unusual anthracotheriid artiodactyl from the late Eocene of Thailand

Abstract
A new anthracothere is described from the late Eocene fauna of Krabi (southern Thailand). Morphological similarities displayed in this specimen and the North American oreodonts certainly reflect convergence. The strong diversity of the Paleogene anthracotheres in Southeast Asia characterizes a major Eocene centre of differentiation for mammals in this area.
Kurzfassung
Aus dem obereozänen Krabi-Becken (Süd-Thailand) wird ein neuer Anthracotheriide beschrieben. Die morphologischen Ähnlichkeiten, die zwischen dem Fossil und den nordamerikanischen Oreodonten bestehen, werden als Konvergenz angesehen. Die wichtigsten Unterscheidungsmerkmale von alttertiären Anthracotheriiden aus Südost-Asien sind weitere Beweise dafür, diese Region als Haupt-Entwicklungszentrum eozäner Säugetiere zu sehen.
Résumé
Un nouvel anthracothère est décrit dans la faune d’âge Eocène supérieur de Krabi (Sud Thaïlande). Les similitudes morphologiques existant entre ce spécimen et les oréodontes nord-américains sont considérées comme des convergences. L’importante diversité des anthracothères paléogènes en Asie du Sud-Est est caractéristique d’un centre de différenciation éocène majeur dans cette région pour les mammifères.
