Abstract
A new genus and species of Middle Triassic ichthyosaur, Wimanius odontopalatus, is described on the basis of an incomplete but well preserved cranium and mandible and compared to other European Middle Triassic ichthyosaurs. Wimanius shows some similarities to the skull of “Mixosaurus atavus” described by v. Huene 1916, but is more primitive in retaining a row of palatal teeth on the palatine. The new genus can not be confidently assigned to a known family.
Kurzfassung
Eine neue mitteltriassische Ichthyosauriergattung und -art, Wimanius odontopalatus, wird auf der Basis eines unvollständigen, aber gut erhaltenen Kopfskeletts beschrieben und mit anderen europäischen Ichthyosauriern der Mitteltrias verglichen. Wimanius zeigt einige Ähnlichkeiten mit dem durch v. Huene 1916 beschriebenen Schädel von "Mixosaurus atavus“, ist aber primitiver als dieser, was der Besitz einer Reihe von Gaumenzähnen auf dem Palatinum unterstreicht. Die neue Gattung kann nicht sicher einer bekannten Ichthyosaurierfamilie zugeordnet werden.
