A new sinemydid turtle (Reptilia: Testudines) from the Lower Cretaceous of the Junggar Basin (NW-China)

Abstract
A new species of the sinemydid turtle genus Dracochelys, D. wimani n. sp., is described from the Lianmuxin Formation (Upper Tugulu Group) of Liuhonggou near Urumchi in the southwestern Junggar Basin (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, People’ s Republic of China). The specimen consists of much of the carapace and plastron and some elements of the appendicular skeleton. It differs from Dracochelys bicuspis by the morphology of the nuchal region of the carapace, which is closer to the genus Hangaiemys. However, it is similar to Dracochelys bicuspis in most other respects, particularly the presence of peripheral fontanelles in the carapace and central and lateral fontanelles in the plastron, which are absent in Hangaiemys. The new species underlines the importance and diversity of the Tugulu fossil turtle fauna and supports present ideas on the interrelationships of sinemydid turtles.
Kurzfassung
Eine neue Art der sinemydiden Schildkrötengattung Dracochelys, D. wimani n. sp., wird aus der Lianmuxin-Formation (Obere Tugulu-Gruppe) von Liuhonggou bei Urumchi im südwestlichen Junggar-Becken (Autonome Region Xinjiang, Volksrepublik China) beschrieben. Das Exemplar besteht aus einem großen Teil des Carapax und Plastrons sowie einigen Elementen des Extremitätenskeletts. Es unterscheidet sich von Dracochelys bicuspis durch die Morphologie der Nuchalregion des Carapax, die mehr an die Gattung Hangaiemys erinnert. Ansonsten findet sich jedoch gute Übereinstimmung mit D. bicuspis, vor allem im Vorhandensein peripheraler Fontanellen im Carapax sowie lateraler und zentraler Fontanellen im Plastron, die bei Hangaiemys fehlen. Die neue Art unterstreicht die Bedeutung und Diversität der fossilen Schildkrötenfauna der Tugulu-Gruppe und unterstützt die gegenwärtigen Vorstellungen über die Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen der Sinemydiden.
