A new ochotonid (Lagomorpha) from the Early Pleistocene of Slovakia

Abstract
A new species of ochotonid (Ochotona horaceki n. sp.) represented by a nearly complete skull from the Early Pleistocene site of Honce, in southern Slovakia, is described. The record comes from the assemblage characterised by a common occurrence of Mimomys pusillus, M. savini, and advanced forms of Microtus (M. hintoni, M. arvaloides, M. nivaloides), which suggests its position at the boundary of Early and Late Biharian. The Early Pleistocene record of the genus Ochotona in Europe is discussed. According to the current view, it comprises the following species: Ochotona pusilla, O. polonica, O. valerotae, and O. horaceki n. sp.
Kurzfassung
Die Beschreibung einer neuen Art von Ochotona (Ochotona horaceki n. sp.) mit fast vollständig erhaltenem Schädel aus der altpleistozänen Lokalität Honce (Süd-Slowakei) wird vorgelegt. Das gleichzeitige Vorkommen von Mimomys pusillus, M. savini und fortschrittlichen Microtus-Arten (M. hintoni, M. arvaloides, M. nivaloides) charakterisiert die Alt-/Jung-Biharium-Grenze. Die altpleistozäne Gattung Ochotona in Europa wird von neuem diskutiert. Auf Grund der heutigen Kenntnisse lassen sich folgende altpleistozäne europäische Arten unterscheiden: Ochotona pusilla, O. polonica, O. valerotae und O. horaceki n. sp.
