A new Ludlow (Late Silurian) Spathognathodontidae (Conodonta) from Bohemia with incipient alternating denticulation

Abstract
The Spathognathodontidae until recently have been mostly lumped on the genus Ozarkodina. Separation of Zieglerodina Murphy, Valenzuela-Ríos & Carls, 2004 on the basis of the presence in the transition-series elements of alternation of denticle sizes on an undulose blade that lacks outer ledges has provided many taxa that were formerly included in the old eosteinhornensis-remscheidensis nomenclature with a taxonomic home. This is true also for a new taxon from the Bohemian late Ludlow with the following characteristics: Sc and Sb elements with an incipient stage of denticle size alternation and with Pb, M, Sb and Sc elements showing a close morphologic affinity with Zieglerodina, but whose Pa elements with very short and broad basal lobes and primitive denticulation require a new generic category. The origin of alternating denticle size offers biostratigraphical potential, however, this development is known to occur heterochronously in several spathognathodontid clades in the Ludlow. Besides it also occurs in Delotaxis since early Přídoli.
Kurzfassung
Bis vor kurzer Zeit wurden die Spathognathodontidae zumeist in der Gattung Ozarkodina zusammengezogen. Die Abtrennung von Zieglerodina Murphy, Valenzuela-Ríos & Carls, 2004 aufgrund wechselnder Zähnchen-Größen in S-Elementen mit gewellten Ästen ohne äußere Kante hat vielen Taxa, die zuvor in der alten eosteinhornensis-remscheidensis-Nomenklatur vereint waren, eine taxonomische Bleibe verschafft. Dementsprechend wird ein neues Taxon aus dem böhmischen Ober-Ludlow aufgestellt, das folgende Eigenschaften hat: Sc- und Sb-Elemente mit Anfangsstadium des Alternierens der Zähnchen-Größe; Pb-, M-, Sb- und Sc-Elemente sind denen von Zieglerodina ähnlich, aber das Pa-Element mit sehr kurzen und breiten Basallappen und einfacher Bezähnelung erfordert eine neue Gattung. Der Ursprung wechselnder Zähnchen-Größe verspricht biostratigraphischen Wert, jedoch entwickelt sich dies Merkmal in mehreren Reihen der Spathognathodontidae im Ludlow heterochron. Außerdem tritt es in Delotaxis im frühen Přídoli auf.
