Abstract

During a biomonitoring survey of rivers in Flanders (Belgium), an unknown Staurosira taxon was observed that initially was identified as S. binodis. Comparison with the Ehrenberg type material of S. binodis from Santa Fiori, Italy, and following an intensive literature search, did not reveal any similar species. The unknown species is therefore described as a new species: Staurosira witkowskiana Van de Vijver & Pottiez, sp. nov. The new species, characterised by a deep central constriction, is compared with other araphid species showing a comparable valve outline. Notes on its ecology and associated diatom flora are added.
