Abstract
Mucor moniliformis is being reported for the first time in the New World, specifically from soil samples collected in an upland tropical forest area in the municipality of Brejão, Pernambuco state, Brazil. This species was identified based on its morphology and ITS rDNA sequences. It is characterized by simple or branched sporangiophores with globose to subglobose columellae and ovoid sporangiospores. Chlamydospores ellipsoid, ovoid, subglobose, globose, or irregular, formed in chains, are abundant in substrate hyphae. This study presents a morphological description of this rare fungus, and aspects of its taxonomy are discussed.
