Abstract
The taxonomic position of Cyanidium caldarium is discussed within a general framework of classification of the Bangiophycidae. On the basis of chemical, morphological and reproductive characteristics,Cyanidium is assigned to the family Cyanidiaceae (Geitler, 1933) which is transferred to the Porphyridiales. In agreement with Feldmann (1967) it is proposed to merge the order Porphyridiales and Goniotrichales into one order with four families. The remaining Bangiophycidae are assigned to three families within the Bangiales, and one each in the Compsopogonales and Rhodochaetales.
