Abstract

Forestline oscillations are important palaeoecological indicators in high mountain areas. According to first results of examining the postglacial forestline's development in the upper Fimbertal, a proof of its extension to an altitude of more than 2350 m a.s.l. during the Atlanticum was given. To verify these conclusions, the findings of fossile pieces of wood in a mire at 2365 m a.s.l. can be quoted. Most of these samples belong to Pinus cembra, as the results of the wood-analysis show. The eldest piece with 197 annual rings was part of a trunk of the same species. 14C data of these samples prove them to belong to the period between 6860-6140 bp. Palynological records and an analysis of fossile stomata out of the same mire confirm these results.
