Abstract
The colonization of experimentally-prepared natural stones was used to investigate the development and structure of macrobenthic communities living in consolidated riparian habitats (riprap) in the River Danube. 100 stones were exposed in two depths of water and removed during the following six months. Colonization was rapid and completed in 21 days in shallow water (0-50 cm) wave-washed by barge traffic. Results are analysed and discussed in terms of species equilibrium theory.
