Abstract
The INQUA Shorelines Commission was founded in 1953. The responsibilities and activities of the two former commissions of the Geographical Union, namely the Commission on Pliocene and Pleistocene Terraces (founded in Lisbon, 1925) and the Commission on Erosion Surfaces (founded in Paris, 1931), are largely continued by this Shorelines Commission. Currently, this commission, divided into five sub-commissions, is the largest commission of INQUA. The sub-commissions deal with all parts of the world and published an Annotated Bibliography of Quaternary Shorelines at INQUA VII, which covers the world literature from 1945 to 1964. In the field of crustal movement, new approaches are being used; the best method for estimating such processes is the measurement of corresponding (dated) locations along the shorelines. This report clarifies the relationship between the work of this Commission and that of other organisations working in the same field, and outlines the main objectives.
Kurzfassung
Die INQUA-Shorelines Commission“ wurde im Jahre 1953 gegründet. Die Verantwortung und Tätigkeit der zwei ehemaligen Kommissionen der „Geographical Union“, nämlich: „Commission on Pliocene and Pleistocene Terraces“ (gegründet in Lissabon, 1925) und „Commission on Erosion Surfaces“ (gegründet in Paris, 1931), werden größtenteils von dieser „Shorelines Commission“ weitergeführt. Zur Zeit ist diese Kommission, gegliedert in fünf Unter-Kommissionen, die größte Kommission der INQUA. Die Unterkommissionen befassen sich mit allen Teilen der Erde und haben auf der INQUA VII eine „Annotated Bibliography of Quaternary Shorelines“ veröffentlicht, welche die Welt-Literatur von 1945 bis 1964 umfaßt. Auf dem Gebiet der Krustenbewegung wird mit neuen Ansätzen gearbeitet; die beste Methode zur Abschätzung solcher Vorgänge ist das Messen von einander entsprechenden (datierten) Stellen der Strandlinien. Dieser Bericht klärt das Verhältnis der Arbeit dieser Kommission zu der anderer Organisationen, die auf gleichem Gebiet arbeiten, und zeigt die wichtigsten Ziele auf.
Résumé
Etablie en 1953, la Commission Côtière de l'INQUA effectue avec succès certains aspects du travail dont se chargeaient l’ancienne Commission sur les Terrasses du Pliocène et du Pléistocène (établie à Lisbonne en 1925) et de la Commission des surfaces d’érosion (établie à Paris en 1931), toutes deux branches de l’Union Géographique Internationale. A l’heure actuelle, c’est la plus grande commission de l’INQUA et elle est divisée en cinq sous-commissions s’occupant chacune d’une partie du monde; elle a marqué la septième réunion d’INQUA par la publication du “Annotated Bibliography of Quaternary Shorelines” courant le monde durant la période 1945-1964. Des idées révolutionnaires pénétrant maintenant le domaine des mouvements de la croûte terrestre, et la mesure des positions relatives de la ligne du niveau (datées approximativement) offre le meilleur moyen d’étudier ces étapes d’importance mondiale. Ce rapport relie le travail de la commission à celui d’autres organisations dans ce domaine et met en relief ses principaux objectifs.
