Abstract
In some sacra of Sellosaurus gracilis (Lower and Middle Stubensandstein, Löwenstein Formation, Germany), the third vertebra is a caudosacral (so S 1 + 2 + CS), in the others it is a dorsosacral (so DS + S1 + 2), and no sacra consist of only two vertebrae (S 1 + 2). S 1 + 2 + CS is the plesiomorphic state for Prosauropoda (and Sauropodomorpha) and DS + S 1 + 2 is the derived state that occurred more than once, as did apomorphic reversals to the plesiomorphic condition. In Sellosaurus gracilis the sacral difference probably represents an individual variation.
