Abstract
A short overview of the gorgonopsians of the Late Permian Kawinga formation of the Ruhuhu basin of Tanzania is presented and their palaeoecological and biostratigraphical relevance is discussed. Two hitherto unrecognized taxa are diagnosed. One is Ruhuhucerberus terror n. g. n. sp., which is proposed for a specimen hitherto referred to Sycosaurus ? kingoriensis, but evidently generically and specifically different from the holotype of that taxon. The second is Titanogorgon n. g. maximus (von Huene, 1950), a rubidgeine, the largest known member of the Gorgonopsia from the African continent.
Kurzfassung
Ein kurzer Überblick der Gorgonopsier der oberpermischen Kawinga-Formation von Tansania wird gegeben und ihre Paläoökologie und biostratigraphische Bedeutung wird diskutiert. Zwei neue Taxa werden diagnostiziert: Ruhuhucerberus terror n. g. n. sp., der für ein bislang der Art Sycosaurus ? kingoriensis zugeordnetes Exemplar vorgeschlagen wird, welches von diesem Taxon generisch und spezifisch klar verschieden ist, sowie Titanogorgon n. g. maximus (von Huene, 1950), ein Rubidgeine, welcher der gößte bekannte Vertreter der Gorgonopsier aus Afrika ist.
