Abstract
"Whatever might be the proximate sources our interest, we need and deserve to know more about the rich heritage of meteorology. There is much known and much yet to be learned. Indeed there are great opportunities here, especially for collaborations between enterprising scientist-historians and historians of science. It is a necessary step in the maturation of a scientific discipline." With these words J. R. Fleming (1996) concluded the introduction to the collection of historical essays on meteorology, which had been compiled to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the American Meteorological Society in 1995. Its German equivalent, the Deutsche Meteorologische Gesellschaft (DMG) looks back on a longer history (it was founded in 1883). During all that time individuals have occasionally provided accounts on the historical development of concepts or compiled biographies of eminent personalities in the field, e. g. Ficker (1931) who presented an unusually personal account in the predecessor of this scientific journal. But it was only in 1992 that Rudolf Paulus initiated a working group concerning the "History of Meteorology", inspired by the first general assembly in Berlin after the unification of the western and eastern parts of Germany, of their meteorological services and meteorological societies.
