Abstract
BALTEX, the Baltic Sea Experiment, has been defined by a group of scientists from 10 European countries to investigate energy and water cycles in the regional climate system covering the water drainage area of the Baltic Sea with the major scientific objectives: - to develop numerical models coupling the atmosphere with the continental surfaces and upper soil layers and also with the Baltic Sea and larger lakes, - to improve numerical simulations of energy and water transports in such coupled systems for the purposes of weather and climate analysis and prediction, and - to relate observed regional variations of energy and water cycles to large-scale circulation anomalies in the global climate system, - to transfer developed methodologies to other regions of the globe with similar climate properties.
