Abstract
From the beginning of the SFB 53, ammonite shells have been a favorite object of the constructional morphology program. More recently, these studies also included endocochleate Coleoidea, because extant forms are available for an experimental approach (see report by Wiedmann & Boletzky) and because complete belemnite animals have been discovered in the Toarcian oil shales of Holzmaden (Wiesenauer, 1976). These unusual fossils throw new light on the preservational, as well as the adaptational, history of these extinct cephalopods.
