Abstract
It is not the aim of this introductory chapter to give a complete description of the geological history of Iran. The authors intend only to enable the reader of the papers collected in this volume to put the details described there in a stratigraphical and tectonical frame. With this aim in mind we mostly try to give geological facts here. Genetical discussions and speculations, however, may be found in "Results and Conclusions" at the end of this volume.
