Abstract
Septal suture retraction is common in Jurassic ammonites which show some kind of subdivision in the dorsal part of the suture (development of lobes of the U1v/U1d or Un types). This process only takes place in those groups in which a simultaneous and rapid ontogenetic change occurs in the early stages. The change consists of an increase in umbilical diameter and a reduction in whorl height. The retraction seems to be the result of the positive allometry of the septum, which has to adjust to a proportionately smaller whorl cross-section. The ribbing that appears together with this change in early ontogeny presumably indicates a change in the mode of life of the organism.
Kurzfassung
Die Retraktion der Lobenlinie ist häufig bei Ammonitina des Jura, die eine Unterteilung des Dorsalabschnittes der Sutur (Entwicklung eines U1v/U1d oder Un) aufweisen. Zudem ist diese Bildung auf die Gruppen beschränkt, bei denen ein schneller Wechsel in den initialen Stadien der Ontogenese, d. h. eine Zunahme des Nabel-Durchmessers und entsprechende Abnahme der Windungshöhe auftritt. Die Retraktion scheint aus der Anpassung des Septums an einen proportional kleineren Windungsquerschnitt zu resultieren. Diese früh-ontogenetische Abwandlung fällt zusammen mit dem Auftreten der Berippung und dürfte vermutlich einem Wechsel der Lebensweise entsprechen.
