Abstract

Morphological criteria of sporangiophores, spores, sporangiola, stylospores and chlamydospores in the genus Mortierella are discussed and weighted. The following key to the sections is presented. 1a Colonies velvety, not exceeding 3 mm in height, sporangia mostly with ochraceous or vinaceous colours; 1b Colonies cottony, consisting of long arched aerial hyphae, mostly with pronounced garlic-like odour; 2a Sporangiophores always unbranched; 2b Sporangiophores at least sometimes branched; 3a Sporangiophores exceeding 150 µ in length; 3b Sporangiophores less than 150 µ in length; 4a Many-spored sporangia present; 4b One-spored sporangiola borne on very slender branches; 4c Sporangiola borne on sporangiophores which equal the hyphae in thickness; 5a Ramification of the sporangiophores clearly racemose; 5b Ramification of the sporangiophores of other shape; 6a Branches arise above the middle of the sporangiophore; 6b Branches arise from a subapical vesicle or swelling of the sporangiophore; 7a Sporangiophores basitonically branched; 7b Sporangiophores meso- or acrotonically branched; 8a Many- or few-spored sporangia present; 8b One-spored, mostly ornamented sporangiola present; 9a Many-spored sporangia present; 9b One-, rarely two-spored sporangiola present.
