In Vitro Cultivation of Some Myxomycetes
Indira, P. U.
Abstract
Eight myxomycetous species were cultured from spore to spore on agar media, five of them perhaps for the first time. A wide variety of media were tried, of which 3% oatmeal agar and 3% carrot decoction agar were most favourable. The chances of success in culture were greater with freshly collected sporangia as inoculum, than with those stored for some time. The most favourable media for growth and fruiting were different among the different species, perhaps indicating differences in nutritional requirements. Bacteria seemed to be essential for growth, at least in some species, and fungal mycelium could be utilized by some. Fruiting usually occurred regularly after a certain period of growth, without any special conditions being provided, except in Physarum gyrosum which seemed to require light of high intensity.
