Abstract

Two chemical races of Parmelia saxatilis, one containing lobaric acid and other without this accessory substance, have been compared. The presence of lobaric acid results in an intense bluish-white fluorescence localized in the pseudocyphellae, in the isidia and in the edges of the thalli lobes, the rest of the thallus emitting a weak ochreous fluorescence from the upper cortex, common to all samples that do not contain lobaric acid. Scanning electron microscopy shows up a deposit of crystals of lobaric acid in these vegetative structures.
