Abstract
Students of polypores have been perplexed and thwarted by hundreds of descriptions so poor that it has been impossible to decide exactly what they might represent. Various interpretations and misidentifications have added confusion. The set-back has affected particularly tropical floras. Now all has changed. With great enthusiasm Dr Leif Ryvarden has overhauled the main herbaria of the world, identified types in modern terms and laid the foundation of secure nomenclature. We can proceed.
