Abstract
An interesting dematiaceous hyphomycete collected on dead rachis of an unidentified palm from Malaysia is described and its taxonomy discussed in this paper. The unique features of the fungus are its simple, caespitose conidiophores, mononematous below, synnematous above by convergence (to form what is designated as a ‘hemisynnema’), the discrete conspicuous conidiogenous cells, and the solitary, acrogenous, distoseptate, brown, gangliar conidia. A new genus, Hemisynnema is proposed in which it is accommodated as a new species, H. malayasianum. As part of the programme of work on tropical microfungi, the author is currently engaged in a study of his collections from Singapore and Malaysia made during his stay at the National University of Singapore. In this paper, an interesting dematiaceous hyphomycete collected on dead leaf rachis of an unidentified palm from Malaysia is described and its taxonomy is discussed.
