Abstract

The monotypic genus Pluvianthus, with P. squarrosus (Steph.) Schust & Schäfer-Verwimp is described, based on a species from the Serra do Mar, Brazil, previously erroneously referred to Strepsilejeunea [= Cheilolejeunea]. The stem anatomy (3 medullary cell rows), lobule structure (hyaline papilla proximal), oil-bodies (small and finely granular), leptodermous leaf cells all isolate it from Cheilolejeunea. These criteria recur in the Lejeunea complex, from which it differs in the capacity to form utriculiform leaves; the subsquarrose, strongly convex leaves with deflexed, sharp apices; the presence of laminar elaters; and in capsule microanatomy.
