Abstract
Lophonardia Schust., monotypic (L. caespitosa Schust., type) is shown to agree with Gymnomitriaceae in the transverse leaves, usually shallowly bilobed, and the lack of underleaves of mature axes. However, it develops only Frullania-type terminal branching (and has 1-2 basal branch underleaves). The stems tend to have an ill-demarcated stratum of firm-walled cortical cells, a little larger than the thickwalled 1-2-celled strata lying within. In this regard it is similar to some Gymnomitriaceae. Because of the leaf insertion and stem anatomy retained provisionally in Gymnomitricaceae — but the latter differ in the all but universal development of lateral-intercalary branching. Until gametangia are discovered, a more definitive placement of the genus remains impossible.
