Abstract
Soil erosion in a tropical environment was one of the first fields of action of colonial administrations and still is a major theme in rural development projects. Without denying the importance of our scientific knowledge or the efficiency of our techniques, one may however ask oneself at least two questions. At first about our view of the problem: is it not a strongly ethnocentric view, which leads us to overlook the rural communities' approach and outlook? And secondly about the fight against erosion: is it not mandatory as a preliminary step and long before any technical help is given, that the economic and social malfunctions be solved, of which erosion is so often the sign?
Kurzfassung
Die Bodenerosion im tropischen Environment war eines der ersten Aktivitätsfelder der Kolonialverwaltungen und sie ist noch immer ein Hauptthema bei ländlichen Entwicklungsvorhaben. Ohne die Bedeutung unserer wissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse oder die Leistungsfähigkeit unserer Techniken abstreiten zu wollen, mag man sich selbst dennoch wenigstens zwei Fragen stellen. Erstens bezüglich unserer Betrachtungsweise eines Problems: Ist es nicht eine stark ethnozentrische Sichtweise, die uns dazu verleitet, die Einstellungen und Ansichten ländlicher Gemeinschaften zu übersehen? Und zweitens hinsichtlich des Kampfes gegen die Erosion: Müßten nicht konsequenterweise, als einleitender Schritt und lange ehe irgendwelche technische Hilfe gegeben wird, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Funktionsstörungen gelöst werden, von denen Erosion häufig das äußere Anzeichen ist?
Résumé
L'érosion des sols en milieu tropical a été l'un des premiers domaines d'action des administrations coloniales et demeure un thème central des projets de développement rural. Sans nier l'importance de notre connaissance scientifique ni l'efficacité de nos techniques, on peut cependant se poser au moins deux questions. Notre perception du problème n'est-elle pas fortement ethnocentrée, ce qui nous conduit à ne pas prendre en compte l'approche et la vision qu'en ont les communautés rurales? En amont des interventions techniques, la lutte contre l'érosion ne passe-t-elle pas, d'abord, par la résolution des dysfonctionnements économiques et sociaux dont elle est souvent la traduction?
