Geochemistry and palynology of metasediments from the phyllite complex in the Greiz area (Saxo-Thuringia, Germany)

Abstract
Low grade metasediments from the Greiz area, northern Vogtland region (Saxo-Thuringia, Germany), were investigated by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and by palynological standard preparation to resolve a complicated tectonostratigraphic situation. The geochemical signature from the lowermost section of the phyllite complex from the core of the Berga Anticline is characteristic of sediments from Neoproterozoic to Early/Middle Cambrian age, compared to chronostratigraphically dated units of Saxo-Thuringia. The upper part of the phyllite complex can be correlated with the Cambro-Ordovician Goldisthal Formation of the Schwarzburg Anticline. The allochthonous Lower Carboniferous metasediments from the Mehltheuer and Elsterberg groups are deposits of a passive margin setting with a more mafic provenance. Furthermore, Lower Ordovician acritarchs are described for the first time from the northern Vogtland Syncline.
Kurzfassung
Niedriggradige Metasedimente des Greizer Gebietes, nördliches Vogtland (Saxothuringikum, Deutschland), wurden mit der RFA und der palynologischen Standardaufbereitung untersucht, um zur Klärung der komplizierten tektonostratigraphischen Verhältnisse beizutragen. Die geochemische Signatur vom untersten Teil des Phyllitkomplexes im Kern der Berga-Antiklinale ist charakteristisch für neoproterozoische und unter-/mittelkambrische Sedimente des Saxothuringikums. Der obere Teil hingegen kann mit der kambro-ordovizischen Goldisthal-Formation der Schwarzburg-Antiklinale korreliert werden. Die allochthonen Unterkarbonsedimente der Mehltheuer- und Elsterberg-Gruppen lassen sich dem geotektonischen Regime eines passiven Kontinentalrandes zuordnen und zeigen eine mehr mafische Provenienz. Unterordovizische Acritarchen werden zum ersten Mal aus der nördlichen Vogtland-Synklinale beschrieben.
