Abstract
Controlled excavations at the ‘Sceltrich beds’ of the Upper Meride Limestone (Middle Triassic), Monte San Giorgio (TI, Switzerland), carried out by the Museo Cantonale di Storia Naturale (Lugano, TI) allowed to collect, among a rich vertebrate and invertebrate fauna, four rare macruran shrimps subject of this study. One specimen is assigned to Ladinicaris sceltrichensis n. gen., n. sp. (Penaeidae Rafinesque, 1815), whereas one specimen is left in open nomenclature among the Dendrobranchiata Bate, 1888. Finally, two specimens are assigned to the Caridea Dana, 1852, representing the second report of a caridean shrimp from the Ladinian, supporting the hypothesis of the starting differentiation of the Caridea since the Middle Triassic. The report of Ladinicaris sceltrichensis n. gen. n. sp. enlarges our knowledge on the presence and diversity of penaeids during the Middle Triassic.
