Abstract

The scalpellid gooseneck barnacle Scalpellum burdigalense Des Moulins, 1875 is recorded from ‘Badenian’ (Middle Miocene, Langhian) deposits at Cirknica near Šentilj, north-eastern Slovenia. The single specimen known to date is a well-preserved right scutum, recovered from motorway construction works (Institute for Palaeobiology and Evolution collections, Kamnik, Slovenia). The present record expands the known geographical distribution of S. burdigalense, previously described from France, Italy (Turin area, Sardinia) and the Ukraine, as well as a related species of Scalpellum sp. nov. aff. burdigalense from the Netherlands, and provides clues as to its palaeoenvironmental living conditions. The associated fauna of Cirknica near Šentilj suggests a shallow sublittoral habitat (< 200 m depth). The present study contributes to our understanding of Miocene barnacle diversity in the Central Paratethys and of the palaeogeographical significance of the Slovenian Corridor as a marine pathway between the Mediterranean and Central Paratethys during the Middle Miocene.
