Abstract

Two stratigraphic sections of the South Portuguese Zone in the vicinity of Nerva in Huelva Province (southwestern Spain) yielded assemblages of ammonoids from the late Viséan. The fossils originate from the Culm Group of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Three taxa are represented: Goniatites cf. amarensis Korn & Ebbighausen, 2025, G. sphaericus (Sowerby, 1814), and G. spirifer Roemer, 1850. Other fossils include the bivalve Posidonia becheri Bronn, 1828 and fragmented plant remains. The ammonoid-bearing strata are assigned to the Goniatites crenistria, G. sphaericus, and G. spirifer zones. The ammonoid biostratigraphy of the studied stratigraphic sections correlates with that of the Baixo Alentejo Flysch Group and the South Portuguese Domain of the South Portuguese Zone.
