Abstract
The infrageneric relationship and geo-molecular divergence patterns of the Gondwanan Monoclea as well as its genetic development and its drift to the tropical environments are the subjects of this study which examines a non-coding region of the chloroplast (cp) DNA. On the basis of our new data it is proposed that, after geographic separation of the ancestral Monoclea by continental drift and consequent isolation of the short-range dispersed populations, an independent evolution took place leading to the two extant species M. forsteri in New Zealand and M. gottschei in temperate southern and tropical South and Central America. Furthermore, our results indicate that in M. gottschei there are two subspecies: ssp. gottschei in Chile and Juan Fernandez Islands, previously only weakly defined by morphological and phytochemical characters, and ssp. elongata in northern South and Central America, which split off, migrated northwards and occupied new territories in tropical environments. Because of its isolated position within the Marchantiopsida, the new monotypic subclass Monocleidae is proposed as new.
