Abstract

The knowledge on the Silurian and Devonian brachiopods of the Tindouf Basin is based on relatively old data. This study is an attempt to refresh the inventory of spiriferid fauna (s.l.) of this region. 25 genera and 34 species are described, among them one new genus (Bernousia gen. nov.), one new subgenus (Cyrtospirifer (Elasmospirifer) subgen. nov.) and 10 new species (Macropleura sp. nov. A, Hedeinopsis africana sp. nov., Cyrtospirifer robardeti sp. nov., Cyrtospirifer aouinetensis sp. nov., Cyrtospirifer (Elasmospirifer) djebiletensis subgen. nov. et sp. nov., Multispirifer kropotkini sp. nov., Eleutherokomma djezairensis sp. nov., Quiringites bitami sp. nov., Bernousia brevedorsata gen. nov. et sp. nov. and Cyrtina evanescens sp. nov.), 10 species remaining in open nomenclature due to lack of sufficient material or poor preservation. The genus Multispirifer is mentioned for the first time in North Africa. The place of some genera in Systematics is critically discussed (Cyrtospirifer Subcuspidella Quiringites). The origin of the genus Cyrtospirifer, its relationships with the genus Vandercammenina and their evolutionary trends are analysed and discussed in the light of the newly described material.
