Abstract

On Easter Monday, 7th of April 1969, Jan P. Bakker, since 1947 full Professor in Physical Geography at the University of Amsterdam and distinguished geomorphologist, died from cerebral haemorrhage at is home in Bussum, where he always so much liked to invite his colleagues. Although his health after a heart attack in 1967 was failing, his death still came unexpectedly even to those near to him. Bakker was born in Rotterdam on 21 July, 1906 and studied Physical Geography at the University of Utrecht under the guidance of Oestreich, who greatly stimulated his interest in geomorphology. His earlier studies, such as those on the Morvan and on the Basin of Mainz, already stood proof of his critical scientific attitude and aroused considerable interest. His greatest productivity, however, he developed after his nomination to the chair in Physical Geography in Amsterdam, a post that he held until his death. His publications from this period qualified him as a leading geomorphologist. Two foci of his scientific interest merit special attention, namely the mathematical approach to the study of slope development and the problem of granite weathering in the humid tropics. On both subjects he made important original contributions.
