Abstract
The study of biofilms growing in the archaeological remains of Carthage (Tunisia) revealed the presence of cyanobacteria, green algae and the red algal genus Cyanidium. This mesophilic Cyanidium sp. is here reported for the first time from the African continent, where it was found in biofilms occurring on ceilings in the ruins of the ancient town of Carthage. In this location, it forms almost unialgal blue-green patinas or is accompanied by the green algae Lobosphaera undulata and Pseudendoclonium spp. in green biofilms.
